Using Clinical Examples to Appreciate the Practice of Safe and Effective Opioid Analgesic Prescribing

This presentation will allow the participant to use the foundational tools presented in the first presentation to build on their skill set through clinical exercises to incorporate their understanding of prescribing laws, best practice guidelines and tools to help them to prescribe opioids in such a manner as to mitigate opioid harm as well as avoid opioid use disorders. Further, the participant will be exposed to clinical examples in the literature to build a toolbox to mitigate opioid harm and recognize opioid misuse and abuse.
For Florida podiatrists, no more than 8 hours (20% of the hours of continuing education required per biennium) of home study programs may be credited toward the licensee’s biennial continuing education requirement for license renewal. A test must be completed and passed demonstrating competency in the topic taught in order to receive credit for the course.

- Integrate the clinical examples with clinical best practices of opioid prescribing, monitoring, and record keeping.
- Recognize and appreciate the importance of using tools: like morphine milligram equivalent (mme) tables to manage opioid prescribing management and reduce opioid harm.
- Define risk factors for potential misuse, abuse, and diversion of prescribed opioid medications and use them to develop subsequent prescribed practices.
- Acknowledge and recognize problematic or aberrant drug-taking behaviors and be able to distinguish unintentional misuse, abuse, and diversion.
- Integrate the screening tools such as ORT, SOAPP-R, COMM, UDS, E-FORCSE or equivalent prescription monitoring software to identify patients at risk for misuse or who are addicted to controlled substances as the participate practices with these examples.
