Recognizing and Stratifying Patients at Risk for Opioid Addiction

When used correctly under a health care provider's direction, prescription pain medicines are helpful. However, misusing prescription opioids risks dependence and addiction. While a history of substance use disorder, certain mental health diagnoses, and concomitant prescription of certain psychiatric medications appeared useful for identifying patients at higher risk, few quality studies were available and no symptoms, signs, or screening tools were particularly useful for identifying those at lower risk. This 30-minute program will present methods and strategies by way of examples to recognize and stratifying patients at risk for opioid use disorder and opioid addiction.

  1. Define risk factors for potential misuse, abuse, and diversion of prescribed opioid medications in at risk patient populations
  2. Become familiar with screening tools as ORT©, UDS, and PDMP and other tools to identify at risk populations for misuse or abuse who may be addicted to controlled substances.
  3. Appreciate how Naloxone is a useful tool to National Academy of Science Engineering and Medicine July 2017 Strategies for Addressing the Opioid Epidemic specifically to reduce harm.
