Traditionally, it has been taught that the treatment for osteomyelitis must consist of surgical debridement of the infected bone followed by 4 to 6 weeks of intravenous antibiotics. Actually, this course of treatment is not based on any human evidence yet has been past down in medicine for generations. In the past few years there have been a number of well designed and executed trials examining the treatment of osteomyelitis and bringing into doubt both the contention that IV antibiotics and surgical debridement are necessary.
