The Diabetic Foot - Pain - Depression Cycle: Why You Should Screen for Depression

Depression remains underdiagnosed in the diabetic population. Shame, stigma, and social rejection surround even a so-called "simple toe amputation." Brandon Brooks, DPM, MPH, FACPM, FASPS and his colleagues have proposed an underlying Diabetic Foot – Pain – Depression Cycle. To break the cycle, clinicians should screen this population for depression pre and postoperatively and not hesitate to make a mental health referral if warranted. Non-traumatic amputations can be a traumatic experience for patients. In this lecture, you will understand why psychiatrists and other mental health providers should be considered members of limb preservation teams.
