Part I - The Role of the Podiatric Physician in Treating the Patient with Total Knee Arthroplasty

Robert Phillips, DPM

Total knee arthroplasty is now performed over 1 million times per year in the United States. The lecture will discuss the pathomechanics that produce osteoarthritis of the knee as well as the resultant foot compensations that develop. It will discuss what foot function to expect after surgery and how that foot function affects the mechanical stress on the artificial knee joint, and why the patient may have some residual symptoms. It will then give an approach for the podiatrist to help the knee replacement patient achieve the best possible function and decrease the stress on the new knee.
